The Gift of Silence

Your lack of words
Made me feel like a comedian on stage
Desperate for applause

Your lack of words
Seemed to confirm my incapability
To keep you smiling

So I stepped off the stage
Avoiding your gaze
Staring at nothing
You did the same

Why did you keep coming
If silence was all you had to tell?

But then you said
That silence is never
As polite as clapping
Never as easy as cheering
And only given more than once
To those who dare
To leave the stage
Naked of all pretence
